SOURCE OF THE DESIGN: Setting the record straight regarding confusion with the actual source of the design, it is owned and was created independently by Speirs. “It started out as a way to raise money for the team, but the thing that made it part of sports history was that this was basically the first time a chance was taken with such a “way out” design in Olympic sports. Up to that time uniforms in sports were very simple and pretty much limited to a number and name. Thus it ended up getting a lot of attention and became a way to generate a tremendous amount of money for the team", recalled Speirs.
The bobsled design commissioned by Prince Albert of Monaco depicts the icicled Monaco logo and royal crown of Monaco. The top of the four bobsleds for Prince Albert featured the artist’s Grimaldi Monk design. The “American Eagle” design which Speirs created for the U.S. Men’s Olympic Bobsled Team sleds was used on the U.S. Men's Olympic Team 4 man bobsleds in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in which silver and bronze medals were won. The American Eagle design was seen again in promotional and broadcast material for NBC’s 2006 Winter Olympics in Turino, Italy, in an Omega watch commercial for the 2006 Torino Olympics and in a bio about Todd Hayes during NBC’s 2006 Olympics 4-man bobsled competition coverage broadcast.
